Counting music — note values that add up

A whole note fills a bar. Cut it in half, then in half again — halves, quarters, eighths. Every rhythm is just these fractions adding up to one full bar.

A bar of music is one whole thing — think of a whole pizza. A half note eats half the pizza, a quarter note a quarter, an eighth an eighth. Stack notes until their pieces add up to exactly one whole bar, then press play and hear your rhythm.

Every note sits on the same line, so the only thing left to read is its value. A quarter is a filled head with a stem, a half is hollow, a whole note is hollow with no stem at all, and eighths grow a flag — or join arms into a beam when they come in pairs. A dot after a note adds half of it again. Overfill the bar and the engraver does what a real copyist does: draws the barline, splits the note and ties it across.

One bar = one whole

In 4/4 time, a whole note fills the bar all by itself — that's the number 1. Every other note is a slice of that 1.

Cut in half, and half again

1 whole = 2 halves = 4 quarters = 8 eighths = 16 sixteenths. Each step down splits every piece in two — halving the fraction, doubling the count.

A bar is only complete when the note-fractions add up to exactly one: ¼ + ¼ + ½ = 1, or ⅛ × 8 = 1. Too little and it's not a bar; too much and it spills over.

Learning goals

  • A 4/4 bar equals one whole; note values are unit fractions of it — whole 1, half ½, quarter ¼, eighth ⅛, sixteenth 1/16 — and 1 = 2 halves = 4 quarters = 8 eighths = 16 sixteenths.
  • A rhythm is valid exactly when its note-fractions sum to 1; comparing and adding them needs a common denominator (¼ + ⅛ = 2/8 + 1/8 = 3/8).
  • A dot multiplies a note's value by 3/2 (adds half again): dotted half = ½ + ¼ = ¾.

Try this

  1. 1.Build ¼ + ¼ + ½ and play it; then rebuild the same bar a different way (eight eighths, or ½ + ¼ + ¼). Ask the class to prove each one still sums to 1.
  2. 2.Load 'two eighths + a half' — it only reaches ¾. Have students name every single note they could add to finish the bar (one quarter, or two eighths, or four sixteenths) and check each sums to 1.
