Turn it up 25%

Per cent means per hundred. Push a tempo, set a volume, and measure how much of a bar is silence — every one of them a fraction, a decimal and a percentage at the same time.

Per cent means per hundred. A percentage is a fraction that has agreed to always put 100 on the bottom, so 37.5% = 37.5⁄100 = 0.375. Musicians say these numbers out loud all day — turn it up, take 10% off the tempo, that chorus is half silence — so here are the three places they really live.

A producer never says “make it 125 beats per minute”. They say “push it about 25%”. Same instruction, and the arithmetic is one multiplication.

+25% = 25⁄100 = 0.25

multiplier = 1 + 0.25 = 1.25

100 × 1.25 = 125 BPM

The long way round says the same thing: add 100 × 25⁄100 = 25 on, giving 100 + 25 = 125. Multiplying by 1.25 just does both steps at once.

b · Turn the volume to 70%

A volume slider is a percentage sitting on top of a wave. Set it to 70% and the note comes out 0.7 times as tall as it could be. Play it — then read the honest warning underneath, because your ears are about to disagree with the arithmetic.

70% = 70⁄100 = 0.7 → the wave is 0.7 times as tall

Here is the honest bit. The maths is exact — 50% really does make the wave half as tall, which is about 6 decibelsdown. But your ears do not hear loudness as a straight percentage. Halve the number and most people say “a bit quieter”, not “half as loud”. To actually sound about half as loud you have to come all the way down to roughly 30%. One bar, cut into eight eighth-notes. Switch a slot on and it holds sound for its whole eighth; leave it off and that eighth is silence. Count the ones that are on, divide by 8, and you have the percentage of the bar that is making a noise.

The division that does it: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, then 0.375 × 100 = 37.5%. And the check that never fails — 37.5% + 62.5% = 100%. Sound and silence between them always account for the whole bar.

Percent is a fraction in a costume

37.5% is 37.5⁄100 is 0.375 is . Four ways of writing one amount. Being able to slide between them on demand is the whole skill.

Adding a percent is multiplying

“Up 25%” is not an addition sum in disguise — it is × 1.25. Once you see the multiplier, +25% then −20% stops being a puzzle: 1.25 × 0.8 = 1, right back to the start.

The parts add to 100

Sound plus silence is always the whole bar, so their percentages always total 100. That is the quickest way to check any percentage answer you ever write down: does the rest of it add up?

Learning goals

  • Converting fluently between fraction, decimal and percent in both directions — 3/8 = 0.375 = 37.5% — and recognising that a percentage is simply a fraction with denominator 100.
  • Percentage increase and decrease as multiplication by (1 + p/100), including the two-step comparison: 100 + 25% = 100 × 1.25 = 125, and −50% = × 0.5.
  • Complementary percentages summing to 100%, used as a self-check, and one honest limit: a percentage change in amplitude does not map onto a percentage change in perceived loudness.

Try this

  1. 1.Set the base tempo to 100 and ask for +25%, then −25% from the new number. The class will expect 100 and get 93.75 — a two-minute lesson in what percentages are taken of.
  2. 2.Load '3 + 3 + 2' and ask for the percentage of the bar that sounds before anyone counts (37.5%). Then ask for the silence without touching the calculator, using the 100% check.
  3. 3.Play the 100 → 50 → 25 → 10% ladder twice and ask the class to point at the step where it first sounded 'half as loud'. Most will pick 25 or 10, not 50 — then show the decibel maths.
